Marquise Weatherspoon has resigned from the Evanston Skokie School District 65 board, effective immediately.
Weatherspoon who joined the board last year served on the Curriculum and Policy Committee, the Park School Advisory Committee and the Head Start Parent Planning Committee.
Board President Sergio Hernandez said her “lived experience and commitment to community service will be truly missed.”
The board is seeking applicants to fill the Weatherspoon vacancy. To be eligible, candidates must by a U.S. citizen, at least 18 years of age, a registered voter and have lived in the district for at least a year.
Applications are available online. The deadline to apply is Sept. 2.
Very odd timing with school about to start, what was the reasoning given?
Ms. Weatherspoon’s selection was anti-democratic and a clear example that this Board, and especially then-president Anya Tanyavutti, are perfectly fine leaning into authoritarian power-grabbing tactics as long as it suits their long-term aims (which seem to have nothing to do with running a school district for Evanston’s kid).
Ms. Weatherspoon’s short tenure on the board reflects the current board’s “win at all costs” measures on their “talk racial equity/kill education” measures. Weatherspoon was never a good candidate – a single mom of 4 who quit her job during the pandemic and seemed to know very little about the board’s work, she was the last person who should be devoting hours upon hours of so called “free” time to the board of education. But, the woke white warriors didn’t care – they cared about their agenda. So, they pushed her candidacy. If you think they will replace her seat with someone who does not fit their agenda, think again. The only hope this city has is to replace every single one of these awful board members as fast as possible. The time will not come soon enough.
