Evanston aldermen will vote tonight on reducing speed limits on three Evanston streets — but at some other places in town it’s hard to know what the speed limit is now.

Take Crawford Avenue, for example. The city code says the limit on Crawford is 30 miles per hour. But signs posted between Golf Road and Colfax Street say the limit is 35 miles per hour.

Public Works Director Suzette Robinson tells Evanston Now she’s had trouble getting the state highway department, which controls the street, to post signs reflecting the city’s speed limit.

Then there’s Ridge Avenue. The city code says the speed limit on Ridge is 30 miles per hour from the north city limit to the south city limit.

But drivers on the stretch of Ridge from the north city limit south to Church Street would never know it.

There’s a sign at the north city limit stating that the city-wide speed limit is 25 miles per hour except where otherwise posted. But no signs tell drivers they can legally go five miles per hour faster on Ridge until they reach Church Street — a mile-and-a-half south of the city limit.

Of course, since aldermen will get a proposal next month that may call for eliminating all speed limits over 25 miles per hour, the lack of signage on Ridge may not matter for long.

For tonight, the aldermen will just vote on cutting speed limits to 25 miles per hour on the following major streets:

  • Chicago Avenue from Dempster Street to South Boulevard.
  • Central Street from McDaniel to Central Park avenues.
  • Oakton Street for its full length.
