Evanston police say a 57-year-old Wheeling man has been charged with aggravated criminal sexual abuse involving a 9-year-old girl for incidents that happened in Evanston and Wheeling.

Police spokesman Perry Polinski says the investigation began in May when the girl complained about the abuse to a school social worker.

The social worker contacted the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services, which in turn notified Evanston police.

Juvenile detectives say the girl reported being touched inappropriately by a friend of her family who’d been a house guest last summer and that similar incidents had occurred when the family visited the man’s home in Wheeling.

After reviewing the evidence, the Cook County State’s Attorney’s office approved the sexual abuse charges against Richard G. Coleman, who lives at 1611 Eagle Grove Court in Wheeling.

He’s scheduled to appear in Skokie district court on the Evanston charge at 9 a.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 13.
