Evanston police say a 19-year-old woman was sexually assaulted by a man who grabbed her as she was walking on Howard Street about 6 a.m. today.

Police say the victim was talking on her cell phone as she walked on the Chicago side of the street when she was grabbed around the waist by the man who dragged her across to the Evanston side and sexually assaulted her in the gangway of a building in the 1700 block of Howard.

The victim managed to break free and run to the corner of Howard Street and Dodge Avenue where she flagged down a passing Chicago patrol officr who took her back to the scene and radioed for an Evanston officer.

Evanston and Chicago police searched the area but were unable to locate the subject, who was described as a black male with a dark complexion, wearing a blue ball cap and a black t-shirt.

The victim was transported to St. Francis Hospital where she was treated for minor injuries and met by an Evanston police victim advocate.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call the Evanston Police Department’s Detective Bureau at 847-866-5040. Anonymous tips can also be sent by text messaging to CRIMES (274637) followed by EPDTIP in the message line and then the tip information.
