A 57-year-old construction worker from Indiana was killed at the Northwestern University Music School construction site on the Evanston lakefront this morning.

Evanston police say the accident occurred shortly after 7 a.m. and the worker, who’s name isn’t being released pending notification of relatives, was taken by ambulance to Evanston Hospital but died shortly thereafter.

Police Cmdr. Jay Parrott says the worker suffered severe injuries when he was struck in the head and chest by a falling beam that had been knocked off the sixth floor by a crane.

A call to Power Construction Company of Schaumburg, the contractor on the project, was not immediately returned.

Parrott says there’s no indication of any criminal wrongdoing in the incident, but that it will be investigated by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration.

University spokesman Alan Cubbage says work on the construction site has been suspended for the day.
