The short-term car rental company Zipcar won approval from Evanston’s Parking Committee last night to station two of its cars at the city parking garage on Chicago Avenue just south of Dempster Street.

That will bring the company’s Evanston fleet to six vehicles. The four existing vehicles are stationed at the Sherman Plaza and Church Street garages downtown.

The city will charge the company the $80 monthly parking permit fee for each of the new spaces in the garage, which is located on the ground floor of a condominium building.

The garage has just 33 spaces, but city officials say that at peak hours it now is only a bit over half full, so no would-be parkers are likely to be inconvenienced by the lease to Zipcar.

The non-profit I-Go car sharing service has three cars in Evanston, one each in the Maple Avenue garage, in the surface parking lot at Main Street and Hinman Avenue and in a parking lot at Sheridan Road and Foster Street on the Northwestern University campus.
