Evanston aldermen start work Saturday morning on the city’s budget for 2011.

Cartoonist Junad Rizki sees his pet pig Ponzi playing a central role in the proceedings as a stand-in for the city’s taxpayers.

  1. No public speaking at budget hearing

In this cartoon,  ‘Wally’ comments "No public speaking at budget hearing! Ha, ha!"

That is a good thing.  Nothing positive would come from public comments at a budget hearing.  In addition to a rant from Junad, we  would also have all of the Branchers show up,  maybe with their kids, to read touching stories about how much they love the branch libraries.

  2. Public Comment at Budget Hearings

Public Comments have been part of the budget process for years.  At the Branch library meeting the Alderpersons present suggested there would be public comments at the meeting on Saturday.  It appears the city that wants to be transparent does not want public input?

Over the years any issue, that a large number of people are interested in will get a large number of people speaking. There are plenty of other issues in the budget beyond the $148,000 for the branches, such as what is the number for 3-1-1 – maybe those who want no public comment can inform us of the number?
