Police say tactical officers working to stem a rash of car burglaries in north Evanston  spotted a youth enter and exit an unlocked car in the 2700 block of Asbury Avenue a half hour after midnight this morning.

Cmdr. Joseph Dugan says the officers watched as the 16-year-old Chicago youth moved on and entered another unlocked car in the 2600 block of Bryant Avenue.

Dugan says that as the officers approached the subject, he fled on foot and was taken into custody in the 1100 block of Central Street, and that officers recovered two bags of loose change from him after he was taken into custody.

He’s been petitioned to juvenile court for 5 counts of burglary to motor vehicle.

Dugan says the police department is asking residents to lock the doors to their vehicles and not to store spare or valet keys inside.
